#333399; text-decoration: underline;\">sodium ion battery manufacturers<\/span><\/span><\/a> have announced the latest progress in the field of sodium batteries. On November 29, HiNa Battery (Fuyang) rolled off the world&#8217;s first GWh-level sodium-ion battery production line.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"padding-left: 2.2em; padding-right: 2.2em; line-height: 40px;\">Li Shujun, general manager of HiNa Battery, revealed that the Fuyang production line plans to expand to 3GWh-5GWh next year, and is expected to realize the promotion and application of 100MW sodium-ion battery energy storage systems.At the same time, the industrialization progress of sodium battery-related companies is accelerating.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div style=\"padding-left: 2.2em; padding-right: 2.2em; line-height: 40px;\">MALION recently stated that the technical route of layered oxide cathode materials will be the first to realize industrialization in the first quarter of 2023 at the earliest. Leading companies such as HiNa Battery and NATRIUM are also leaders in this technology route. The relevant leading companies still have a first-mover advantage.<\/p><h2 id=\"Three-technical-routes-of-sodium-batteries\">Three technical routes of sodium batteries<\/h2><p>The industry attention of sodium batteries is increasing day by day. On the one hand, under the goal of &#8220;double carbon&#8221;, energy conservation, emission reduction and development of clean energy are the inevitable requirements and transformation direction of China&#8217;s energy strategy;<\/p><p>On the other hand, the price of lithium carbonate is high, and the upstream cost has risen sharply in the short term to further compress the profit margins of the midstream and downstream. It is imminent to find alternative materials, which has accelerated the research and layout of enterprises on the industrialization of sodium batteries.<\/p><p>In the initial stage of industrialization, the choice of technical routes of relevant companies determines the future market competition pattern to a certain extent. Industry experts once said that the layered oxide process is mature, its process flow is similar to equipment and ternary materials for lithium batteries. The supporting enterprises are basically mature ternary cathode material manufacturers who can provide samples and mass production raw materials with good consistency and stable performance. It is the preferred solution for industrialization in the near future.<\/p><p>Compared with the lithium iron phosphate cathode material, the cost per watt-hour of the sodium layered oxide cathode is lower. The original intention of the industrialization of sodium batteries is to reduce costs, so the cost-effective market for its main replacement power and energy storage overlaps with the scene of lithium iron phosphate. In the market scenario of small power and power cost performance, the layered oxide route is expected to form a differentiated competitive advantage based on its higher rate and low-temperature performance advantages than lithium iron phosphate.<\/p><p>In comparison, Prussian blue compounds have low cost, broad development space, and high voltage and reversible capacity. Due to the convenience of preparation and easy availability of raw materials, and the demonstration of HiNa Battery, layered oxides are currently developing rapidly. In terms of cost and energy density, after the Prussian blue material is relatively mature in the future, the cost performance will be higher, and the growth will accelerate.<\/p><p>Experts generally believe that although the industrialization time of the three technical routes of sodium batteries is sequential, who can gain a firm foothold in the market depends on when each technology can break through its own bottleneck. In the short term, the two complement each other and communicate with each other.<\/p><p>Qi Haishen, president of The Solar Tech in Beijing, said that the product lines of sodium electrolyte and lithium electrolyte are compatible, and the product formula is also similar, and relevant manufacturers can quickly switch production capacity to sodium battery products. It is precisely because of the ability to switch on the product line that lithium battery companies are currently increasing their deployment of sodium batteries.<\/p><p>From the perspective of the types of companies that deploy cathode materials, sodium battery start-ups and traditional lithium battery companies with leading technology layout and rich experience in standardized production are accelerating the development and industrialization of sodium battery cathode materials. From a technical point of view, the research and development strategy of the sodium-electric layered oxide cathode is similar to that of the lithium-ion ternary material, and the energy density is relatively high.<\/p><p>The crystal structure of layered oxides is similar to lithium battery ternary materials, and its manufacturing process is also highly overlapped with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takomabattery.com\/what-is-ternary-lithium-battery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\">ternary lithium battery<\/span><\/span><\/a> cathode electrode, so manufacturers can carry out technology transfer. Manufacturers engaged in the production of ternary materials have more technology accumulation and supply chain advantages in the layered oxide route. According to CATL&#8217;s schedule, mass production of sodium-ion batteries will be achieved next year. Although leading companies are promoting the industrialization process, industry insiders still have certain concerns about the industrialization of sodium batteries.<\/p><p>It is difficult to truly form industrialization, a big reason is that the supporting cathode materials have not really achieved mass production and stable production. The current direction of new power enterprises is still mainly based on materials. At present, Chinese enterprises are mainly concentrated in small-scale production and manufacturing. Whether it is polyanion or layered oxide, there is currently no way to make laboratory level in mass production.<\/p><p>At present, the development of sodium batteries mainly needs to solve the problem of high cost and improve cycle life. The time point for industrialization and large-scale production has not yet come. After the promotion of small batches, a certain amount of production capacity can be gradually released in the next two to three years, and the cost performance will also be highlighted.
