Batteries are the source of electrical power, which contains one or more electrochemical cells having external connecting points to power up the electric devices. Batteries are classified into two main forms with respect to their charging capability:
1.Primary or disposable or non-rechargeable
2.Secondary or rechargeable

Primary batteries are used just once and then discarded as the electrode materials changes permanently during the discharging process. And the secondary batteries are the ones that can be discharged and then charged again multiple times applying electric current from an external power source. Our common lithium RV battery, electric skateboard battery are also rechargeable secondary batteries.

The most commonly used rechargeable general purpose batteries used to be lead-acid batteries. The first lead-acid battery which is rechargeable was invented in 1859.

The batteries that we usually or generally use for different electric appliances that need a voltage of about 4V, 6V, and 12V, are general purpose batteries. The batteries we use in the automotive industries and are installed within the car engine are SLI batteries. SLI stands for starting battery (S), Lighting (L) and Ignition (I) which are also the main purposes of these batteries to provide power resource for these purposes at many places.

As compared to the new and modern rechargeable batteries, these general purpose batteries like lead-acid ones have low energy density but as they supply high power current surges makes them used for the respective purposes. They have high Energy density to weights ratio.

These are lead-acid general purpose batteries and further types consists of the sealed and the other one is flooded. The above-mentioned general-purpose battery SLI is the flooded battery.

Sealed one are VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) and the SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) e.g., AGM battery. These VRLA and SLA, like AGM batteries, are used in the general energy storage systems, in the emergency light and power supplies, in the communication devices or systems for long running time capability, and now in the electric cars whose demand is increasing day by day, about whole bottom area of these electric vehicles (EVs) are composed of these batteries for their large capacity and more running of the vehicle.

Mostly the general purpose batteries are valve regulated lead acid batteries (VRLA) with a voltages of 4V, 6V, or 12V. Applications of general purpose batteries

For now the lithium-ion batteries with more advancements like lithium-ion phosphate batteries are also being abundantly used now in almost every appliance or gadgets, as they have an advantage that these can be recharged a lot of times with a little reduction in the capacity. There are many other types of such batteries being used at different areas. These types and their applicability are enlisted in the table as follows:

Wet Cell Standby Batteries These are for deep discharge and commonly used for large backups for telephones and computer centers, for storing grid energy and also for the off-grid household power supply in case of power failure.
Traction Batteries The EVs that we have today have such types of batteries for giving power supply for long distances. These EVs includes big vehicles like SUVs, cars like Tesla, and even small golf carts have such power batteries.
Large Lead-Acid Batteries Conventional diesel-electric submarines and nuclear submarines use these batteries when submerged, and for emergency power.

These batteries usually consist of 4-, 6- and 12-volts batteries, with many levels of ampere hours (Ah). 4V batteries are very rare and also have very less applications. As they have very less capacity for most of the gadgets as compared to their size which is large as compared to the power they provide. Their sizes are in the order of 2” and goes up to the 22”. What are the general purpose batteries

6 volts batteries are more as compared to the 4 volts batteries with different shapes and sizes. They have different capacities from 1 Ah to 33 Ah and more. But this also changes the sizes of these batteries. Like the 1 Ah battery size is about 6.81” x 1.65” x 2”, and 33 Ah battery’s size is about 7.13” x 2.99” x 6.5”. The most common of these batteries are 12V which are used in the heavy-duty appliances like UPS, solar batteries, and different vehicles. These batteries are much heavier and bigger in sizes with an average dimension of 10” x 9” x 7” and weight about 20 to 60 kgs. They can provide with the current capacity of more the 200+ Ah.

These 12V general purpose batteries are mostly used due to their high capacity and durability.   • Nickel metal hydride batteries have superseded Ni-Cd batteries with better capacity, energy density, and environmentally friendly and also lower in cost. They have higher power than lithium and have high drain applications like camera etc.
  • Lead-acid batteries are the oldest and also the most stable. They have been known to be the solution of any heavy workload. This is the battery which is installed in most of the vehicles heavy or light.
  • Lithium-ion batteries are the future of the rechargeable general purpose batteries, and they are continuously undergoing improvements and developments. At this time, we can see that in our home and offices the batteries we use with the UPS systems or other power supplies like solar PVs system, or in our cars have to be changed within some years.

And these batteries are very costly if changed frequently due to the bad health of some conventional general purpose batteries that are mostly used. And these arises a need for charging it after some time depending on the use and the depth of discharge.

But the new technology batteries are further expensive to be used within a house. So, there is a need that the technology is further exploited and made cheaper for everyone to buy and with this we will be able to make some advancements into the future.
