Envision AESC third battery factory in North America is located in Florence

On October 19 this year, BMW announced that it has reached a long-term cooperation with Envision AESC, which will provide the next generation of high-performance, high safety and zero carbon power battery products for BMW’s new generation of models.

The energy density of the new battery will be increased by 20%, the range will be increased by 30%, the charging speed will be increased by 30%, and the carbon emission will be reduced by 60%.

Global layout of Envision AESC

According to data, in April 2019, Prospect Technology Group announced that it had completed the equity acquisition of NISSAN’s AESC power battery business, and Envision AESC was officially established. The company is committed to the R&D, design, manufacturing and sales of power battery systems and energy storage battery systems.

In 2021, Envision AESC ranked the 9th in the top 10 power battery companies in the world in terms of power battery installed capacity in 2021 with 4.2GWh. In addition, data shows that from January to October this year, Envision AESC ranked 15th in terms of installed capacity of power batteries of 0.6GWh among Chinese lithium iron phosphate power battery companies from January to October 2022.

In terms of customers, Envision AESC customers cover Benz, BMW, RS, NISSAN, HMC and other global car companies. On November 22, Mazda released its medium-term business plan and 2030 performance goals, and updated its electrification strategy and plan.

The plan shows that it has reached a supply agreement with Envision AESC to ensure a stable supply of electric vehicle batteries while increasing the domestic production of electric vehicles in Japan.

In terms of capacity layout, Envision AESC has established 13 battery production bases in China, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Spain:

The four battery production bases in China are located in Wuxi, Ordos, Shiyan and Cangzhou respectively
The three battery production bases in the United States are located in Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina
Two battery production bases in Japan are in Kanagawa and Ibaraki Prefecture
Two battery production bases in the UK are located in Sunderland
One battery production base in Spain is located in the Navar Mora de la Marta region
One battery production base in France is in Duet

Envision AESC expects to achieve an annual capacity of 100GWh in North America by 2025Among the battery production bases in the United States, the Tennessee plant started operation in 2012, with an annual capacity of 3kWh; On April 13 local time, Envision AESC announced that it would build a new power battery super factory in Kentucky, with a planned capacity of 30GWh and the potential to expand to 40GWh.

The energy density of the latest generation of power battery products produced by the factory will be increased by 30%. Envision AESC expects to achieve an annual capacity of 100GWh in North America by 2025, and new products will be introduced one after another.

In terms of future development, it is estimated that Envision AESC’s global planned capacity will reach 400GWh by 2026, and it is planned to achieve the goal of 15% global market share of power batteries.

Tesla 4680 battery is expected to achieve 10.2GWh annual capacity

When it comes to large cylindrical batteries, Tesla has to be mentioned. On September 23, 2020, Tesla released a new 4680 large cylindrical battery with electrodeless ears, which is 80mm high and 46mm in diameter.

The new battery can increase the battery energy by 5 times, power by 6 times, but reduce the cost by 14%. It is estimated that by the end of this year, Tesla is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 6.8-10.2GWh for 4680 cylindrical batteries and can assemble 90-137000 Model Y.

Compared with traditional small cylindrical batteries such as 18650 and 21700, the advantages of Tesla 4680 battery are:

Reduce the use and production process of structural parts
Reduced costs
Effectively improve the overall space utilization of the battery system
Energy efficiency and safety performance can be considered

EVE has already laid out two types of large cylindrical batteries, 4680 and 4695. In August this year, the first system product equipped with 46 series of large cylinder batteries independently developed by EVE was successfully launched on the pilot line of its research institute. The company is expected to achieve 20GWh of large cylindrical battery capacity in 2023 and 40GWh in 2024.

On September 9 this year, BMW announced that it would take the lead in using cylindrical electric cores in new models from 2025. At present, the determined suppliers of cylindrical batteries are CATL and EVE. BMW has awarded these two partners contracts worth more than 10 billion euros for the production demand of battery cells.

At the same time, CATL announced that from 2025, CATL will supply cylindrical batteries for pure electric vehicles of BMW’s new model architecture. According to the agreement, CATL will supply BMW with new cylindrical batteries with a standard diameter of 46mm. These products will be produced in two battery plants located in China and Europe, each of which will supply BMW with an annual capacity of up to 20GWh.

EVE also announced that its subsidiary Eve Power will provide large cylinder lithium ion battery cells for BMW Neue Klasse series vehicles. In addition, JAC, Northvolt, LG, Panasonic and others have also invested in large cylindrical batteries. LG is one of the top 10 solid-state battery companies in 2022.

Conclusion

The 46 series large cylindrical battery has great potential for cost reduction and efficiency increase. It is estimated that the global market will exceed 200GWh in 2025. In terms of cost reduction, it is predicted that the investment cost of 4680 cylindrical battery production and equipment is expected to be halved.

In terms of efficiency, the large cylindrical full pole lug scheme reduces internal resistance and increases heat conduction, which can reduce the fast charging time to less than 15 minutes. Upstream material companies with advantages such as leading technology, high product maturity, global business and production line layout are expected to take the lead in benefiting.
