Analysis of pumped storage projects in the first half of 2022
In the first half of 2022, a total of 12 pumped storage projects were put into operation, an increase of 11 times year-on-year and a significant improvement over the first half of 2021.
These pumped storage are mainly concentrated in East China, South China and Northeast China. The top 5 provinces with installed pumped storage capacity are: Zhejiang, Shandong, Guangdong, Guangxi and Heilongjiang.
In addition to traditional pumped-storage projects, China is also experimenting with new micro-grid projects such as wind-solar water storage, such as the first phase of the wind-solar water-storage pumped-storage power station in Wuhan, Hubei, and the Sichuan Chunchangba variable-speed pumped-storage demonstration power station. Pumped-storage energy storage is also a part of it, exploring a new mode of multi-energy complementary operation.
Different from the past, compared with the steady emergence of pumped storage power plant in the first quarter, the contracted plans for pumped storage power stations in the second quarter showed an explosive growth.
Among the 280 projects under construction, 145 are pumped-storage power station projects with a planned installed capacity of up to 200GW. The development of pumped-storage is unprecedentedly prosperous.
Summary
With the improvement of local allocation and storage policies and the support of energy storage support policies, the grid-connected and operational scale of electrochemical energy storage projects in the second quarter of 2022 has increased significantly compared with last year, with a year-on-year increase of 166.3%.
The scale of centralized new energy projects and power-side auxiliary service projects has grown steadily, and many user-side energy storage projects have also been put into operation, covering all regions of the country.
At the same time, the scale of energy storage projects to be constructed and planned is huge, nearly 8GW. Centralized new energy projects, grid-side energy storage and power-side energy storage account for the highest proportions.
In addition to the planned project bidding, winning the bid or starting construction, more and more companies are also signing contracts and planning new energy storage projects, and the development of energy storage projects is booming.
