Household energy storage enters the high voltage era
With the global popularity of electric vehicles and the continuous increase in the cost of electricity prices for residents, the capacity of household storage systems is gradually increasing.
High voltage is an important trend in the development of household storage products. The high voltage can reduce the current, thereby reducing the heat generation, and improving the discharge efficiency and safety.
This article will analyze the reasons for the popularity of high-voltage household energy storage and introduce some high-voltage system products and batteries.
What is a high voltage battery?
High-voltage batteries usually have a battery pack voltage above 48V, and multiple cells can be connected in series to achieve high voltage at the battery pack level.
Compared with low-voltage systems, high-voltage systems have higher requirements for cell consistency and BMS management capabilities, and relatively higher technical thresholds.
Therefore, the main markets for high-voltage home energy storage are still developed countries and regions such as Europe, Japan, and Australia.

In Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, where prices are more sensitive, low-voltage home energy storage systems are still the main market.
In addition, among the top 10 powerwall manufacturers for home energy storage in the world, Tesla’s home energy storage occupies a dominant position in the US market.
Why is high-voltage energy storage becoming popular?
On the one hand, high-voltage household energy storage systems are safer, more stable, and have higher system efficiency than low-voltage ones.
The circuit topology of the hybrid inverter under high voltage system is simplified, the size and weight are reduced, and the failure rate is reduced.
On the other hand, high-voltage home energy storage systems are cheaper than low-voltage energy storage systems. When using batteries with the same capacity, the battery current of the high-voltage energy storage system is smaller, and the interference to the system is less.

Moreover, the requirements for the selection of electronic components are relatively low, and the cost is therefore relatively low.
The overall gross profit margin of the high-voltage three-phase product system is 20% higher than that of the low-voltage product, matching the three-phase electricity demand in villas and other scenarios, and is expected to continue to grow in the high-end market share.
High voltage household energy storage system products
The high-voltage trend of household storage systems is obvious, and many companies have launched high-voltage energy storage products one after another. The following is a brief introduction of several high-voltage system products.
PYLONTECH
Pylon’s outdoor waterproof stackable household energy storage products adopt a modular design. The products are divided into two specifications: parallel type and series type.
The Force-H system increases the working voltage by connecting battery modules in series, and expands capacity by connecting multiple cabinets in parallel. All mainstream inverters are compatible with Paineng products to achieve plug and play.
Among them, the nominal capacity of the Force-H1 system is 24.864KWh (the capacity of a single battery module is 3.552KWh), the nominal voltage is 336V, and the rated rate is 0.5C.
BYD
BYD exhibited two home energy storage products, Energy Panel and Energy Pod.
The Energy Panel wall-mounted household energy storage all-in-one machine is only 80mm thick, uses lithium iron phosphate blade batteries, supports flexible configuration of 6.6~26.4kWh, and has a rated voltage of 51.2V. It is a low-voltage household energy storage system.
The Energy Pod DC household energy storage system adopts lithium iron phosphate battery, which combines function integration and modular design, including EMS and battery box DC system.
It is faster and more convenient to install and expand, and can support off-grid applications. Energy Pod can stack 2~4 battery boxes, supports 8.64~17.28kWh capacity configuration. The rated voltage can be 204.8/307.2/409.6V, and the maximum working altitude can reach 4000 meters.
GOODWE
GOODWE Lynx Home F series high-voltage lithium battery adopts scalable battery modular design.
Each battery module has a capacity of 3.27kWh, and can support 2-5 battery modules used in series. The flexible combination and expansion of the battery capacity of 6.6-16kWh can be realized as a whole.
The intelligent design further simplifies installation, operation and maintenance. Using lithium iron phosphate battery, 1C charge and discharge can reach 80% EOL. LX F6.6-H, LX F9.8-H, LX F13.1-H, LX F16.4-H rated voltages are 204.8/307.2/409.6/512V respectively.

Summary
In short, high voltage means that the voltage platform rises. If the total energy storage system capacity is to be kept constant, the battery cells need a smaller capacity.
The energy storage cells of the low-voltage platform are mostly 100Ah, while the high-voltage platform gradually transitions to 50Ah.
The smaller capacity of the battery cells means that more batteries need to be connected in series, which puts higher requirements on the consistency and stability of battery manufacturers’ battery products.
Lithium battery manufacturers may follow up household storage needs and propose new battery solution.
